I have struggled with some serious health issues that have gotten worse in the last few years. (Welcome to my 50's!)
I've reached the point where my doctors can't do any more than they are doing and my symptoms are very limiting and getting worse. Being unable to do many of the things I want to do has been tough.
A couple of weeks ago, I was considering stopping my lifesaving medication because I just felt so hopeless.
Well, I went down that rabbit hole (pun intended) and found many other medical and scientific studies that showed that having kindness, love, and real personal connections in our lives does more to affect our health and well-being than quitting smoking 15 packs of cigarettes a day!
Ok, so if there aren't more medicines to help me, I need more love.
Now to be very clear, I have a wonderful loving husband, children, family, and friends. I don't have a lack of love from others in my life. So I decided I needed to have more love coming out of me.
In realizing this, I needed to know what to improve on to be more loving, so I went to the Bible in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. I found this verse and love the definition of what Christ-like love looks like.
I decided to really put this kind of love into action to see if it would truly improve my physical health.
This is very different than any other approach I’ve taken before of following the example of The Savior.
I decided to focus on each part of the verse for 3 weeks, building on them as I go. I would start with Patience, then go to Kindness, etc.
I had a group text that I was using to share my experiences with my family, but I have had friends asking to join and one good friend asked me to just share my journey here on social media.
So that is what I'm doing. As I work through each characteristic from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, I will share what I am learning and how I am trying to put it to work in my life. I have a long way to go, especially when it comes to patience, so please keep your expectations low. But, I really will be trying. That's all we can do right?
If you want to follow my journey, I'll be posting about it a few times a week. If you have insights, inspiration, or ideas of how I can become better at the things I'm working on, or you have stories of how you or someone else has been more patient, kind, etc. I would love to hear them.
I believe that Miracles happen… sometimes we need to open the right doors so God can teach us as He heals us.
